The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is one of the oldest cultivated plants; we find mention of it in the Bible.
It is a type of palm known and widely cultivated primarily for its dates. In Czech, the species is also called the common date palm or popularly the date palm. Today, it is widely cultivated in North Africa and the Near and Middle East (from Egypt to Pakistan). Outside this area, dates are cultivated in China or the USA.
It is a medium-sized tree growing to a height of 15-25 meters, with a crown span of 6-20 meters. One plant can grow as a single trunk, or as a cluster of several trunks with common roots. They contain up to 70% carbohydrates, which are represented in the form of natural sugars and a low water content. They are a rich and significant source of potassium, chlorine, iron and vitamin B. In the fresh state, they also contain a significant amount of vitamin C, which is lost during drying. An adult date tree can produce up to 150 kg of dates per year in favorable conditions.
